A photograph taken at Peatmoor Lagoon has been chosen by the Mayor of Swindon Councillor Michael Bray to win a competition run by Swindon Photographic Society.
He was presented with a wide selection of pictures taken within 20 miles of the town at the the society meeting on 28 March and settled on a shot taken in West Swindon by Jim Bullock.
The mayor wasn’t aware that his choice for the two runner-up images was a family affair. Second place went to Garry Henderson from Haydon Wick and third was his daughter Jodie, 17, the club’s youngest member.
Jim was presented with the John Evans Cup, named after the former chief photographer with the Evening Advertiser who instigated a competition for members of the Swindon Camera Club for taking a photograph within a ten mile radius of Regent Circus in the previous year.
The competition has been ongoing for at least fifty years, as the Rose Bowl was first won by a W. Gale in 1963. Retired R&D engineer Jim Bullock joined the club late in 2009 and took up serious digital photography around that time.
Club press secretary Paddy Bohan said: "Councillor Bray’s visit to the club is possibly the first time a mayor has attended a SPS meeting as the competition has been previously judged in the West Swindon Library. Jim’s print will be framed and presented to the Mayor. We hope it will hang in the Mayor’s Parlour for many years to come."
