Mike Smithson, Managing Director of The Property Jungle, the Swindon based web design agency, has just returned from a grueling cycle ride.
Mike, 42, peddled 600km through some of South Africa?s roughest terrain to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Relief. He was one of 50 cyclists who endured extremes of temperatures and landscape to raise almost ?250,000 for the charity.
The route of the grueling 8 day cross country ride took in spectacular scenery and encountered exotic wildlife including zebra, ostrich, baboons, penguins and even whales. Much of the route was on dirt roads and overnight accommodation was nothing more than rough camping.
Drinking as much as 10 to 12 litres of water a day was necessary to prevent the cyclists from becoming dehydrated over the rough ground. Such was the physical stress on the bike that Mike was riding, every part of it had to be replaced during the ride, including the frame!
“I’ve been training for this since January and it was still the hardest thing that I have ever done but I would do it again tomorrow,” said Mike. “Everyone has been so generous, I have raised an amazing ?6000 for this most worthwhile of causes. I am delighted and relieved that I did not let Macmillan down!”
And the fund raising continues, Mike has set up a secure web page where he would be delighted to accept donations for Macmillan. Visit http://www.justgiving.co.uk/mike_in_africa http://www.justgiving.co.uk/mike_in_africa or call 0870 246 1620.
