Up to 250 houses could be built by Persimmon Homes on a field next to Hook Street, between Lydiard Park and King Henry Drive, Grange Park.
In 1987s Wiltshire County Council proposed to build a primary school on the site but residents strongly objected to the idea and forced the county to look for another site.
Eventually they agreed a land swop with builders EH Bradley so that Tregoze Primary School could be built at Sleaford Close, off Hay Lane, in Grange Park.
The present concern was sparked when resident Troy Wilson observed soil samples being taken in the field and enquiries with Swindon Council's planning department that an environmental assessment was being considered.
Enquiries by swindonlink revealed that Persimmon Homes has an interest in the site. Les Durrant, MD of planning consulting group DPDS, confirmed this and said the site has always been part of the western expansion. “Our clients are considering if the site is suitable for development. If it were to come forward, the proximity of Lydiard Park and existing housing would be closely considered.”
Troy Wilson contradicted this view. "I was surprised and disappointed at the proposal and quickly rallied support from our neighbours and those residents who border the field.
"We have also gained support in opposing any future planning permission applications from both the local councillors and Anne Snelgrove."
Anne Snelgrove added, "I will be opposing any development on this land and have written to Dave Potter, Director of Planning at Swindon Borough Council, for more information regarding if this development is part of the town plan and how far along the planning process this is."
Councillor Michael Bray, said, "Swindon planners have told me that this site is not part of our Adopted Local Plan housing allocation."
Councillor Steve Wakefield said houses further down the hill from the field were flooded during the heavy rain of 2007 when it was discovered that the open land drained through the housing area.
