Swindon South MP Robert Buckland has been appointed to the powerful Parliamentary committee to investigate privacy and press intrusion, and media regulation.
“This committee will be at the heart of the debate and will be able to call for evidence and witnesses,” said Robert. “The Murdoch/News International/phone hacking imbroglio has given urgency to the many issues that have been building up for years around press intrusion.
“My main concern is that members of the public are able to seek and achieve redress when they fall victim to media misconduct, for example the hacking of private data. It shouldn’t just be for the wealthy who can resort to the law.
“On the nature of regulation, I believe that the current system of complete self-regulation is not working and that we need to move to a model used in other walks of life, where regulators that are independent of Government operate within a statutory framework.
“The committee has a wide remit which will contribute to a new relationship between Parliament as representatives of the people and the press.”
