Talented Hair and Beauty students have been awarded for their outstanding work over the past year.
Level 1, Level 2 and BTEC students showed off their work in a number of themed competitions, with red carpet creations and even a vintage bridal look.
After a glamorous and eventful day, Chirs Hale, Director of Curriculum, gave an opening speech and welcomed everyone to a special reception and presentation event. Prizes were handed out by Graham Taylor, Principal of New College.
The judging area and presentation room was also decked out to recognise and celebrate the Diamond Jubilee complete with gold fish swimming in bowls.
Liz Lee, Section Leader for Beauty Therapy, Complementary Therapy, Hair and Media Makeup said “This new venture for New College has proved to be a huge success and to celebrate our first year we thought a competition would showcase the skills of our students. College staff were blown away with the amount of hard work, care and attention that all the students put into the entries on the day. The standard was high and it was a shame that we couldn’t give a prize to them all. We have had continuous support from all sectors since we started including local employers, awarding bodies, parents, families and friends and with our courses expanding next year we are pleased that we have kicked off to a good start.”
Distinction would like to thank Physique, Ellisons, Center Parcs and Salonwear who kindly sponsored the prizes on the day and also our judges Stephen Vickers, CEO VTCT Awarding Body, Lisa Curtis, Look Good Feel Better Charity and Kay Elkins, a nail specialist and tutor.
The competition included a raffle in aid of ‘Look Good Feel Better Charity’ who the salon work with to provide make-up artists at Swindon Great Western Hospital to help instruct in workshops for ladies suffering from the effects of cancer. This is a rewarding experience for both the staff and students happening on a monthly basis.
Photography Foundation Degree Students Gema and Niki were on hand all day to photograph the models and the therapists.
Distinction is a modern, highly resourced salon, purpose built in 2011, and operates on a commercial basis with treatments carried out by trainee therapists undertaking their assessments at New College. All treatments are monitored and supervised by highly trained staff.
