Swindon’s mayoral chain of office was passed onto Haydon Wick councillor Rex Barnett for 2010/11 on 21 May and he has announced his chosen charities will be the Willows Counselling Service, Swindon parent run Children’s Cancer & Leukaemia Movement (CALM) and Prospect Hospice.
The former railway engineer, construction worker and salesman and now councillor of Haydon Wick has been in public life on and off since the 1960s, with Thamesdown then Swindon Borough Council, Wiltshire County and Haydon Wick Parish Council. He also chaired the governing bodies of Greenmeadow and Haydon Wick primary schools and was a governor at the former Headlands grammar school. Rex rejoined Haydon Wick Parish Council during the floods of 2007.
Rex said, “my interest in politics stems back to my family, with my father being a keen Labour supporter. Obviously I’ve gone the other way. I’ve always been motivated by the things that have happened to me at different stages of my life. For example with young children I wanted to get involved in their education, and on the planning committees I wanted to have an influence on events in my local area.”
Rex and his wife Sandra were very busy in the role of deputy mayor and mayoress last year. They’re looking forward to a full year.
“We’ve met so many brilliant people and I’ve come to realise like never before how full of talent Swindon is,” said Rex. “My term of office with Sandra will be a year when we can make a difference to all those people working behind the scenes in various groups and good causes around the town, by raising their profile and bringing them together with others who can help. And we’re going to enjoy ourselves.”
