The holiday may be behind you, but, for some, the thought of ‘getting on with it’ until the next break can leave you feeling flat, de-motivated or depressed writes Elaine Watt of Focused Counselling.
We live in very stressful times, and riots in August and news from the economic frontline has cast a gloomy pall over everything. Yet giving yourself space and time to reflect on who you are, why you react to situations in the way that you do, why you find yourself repeating unhelpful behaviour or how you are feeling may not be something that you have considered.
In time carrying difficult and painful feelings affects your well-being which in turn puts extra pressure on your relationships, your work, your creativity and your health.
While it can be really helpful to talk to someone you know and trust, you may feel more comfortable confiding in someone who’s removed from your personal situation and is therefore more objective. Also, having a set time and space to talk may help you to work through the issues concerning you.
Making the decision to speak to a counsellor is not about being ill or inadequate, it is about making a positive choice to help yourself.
