North Swindon councillor Vera Tomlinson has welcomed the fact that Tadpole Farm Primary School is to open in the building that will eventually become Redhouse Community Centre.
In 2011 she badgered Crest Nicholson to offer the land close to Redhouse village centre at a discount and demanded Swindon Council’s cabinet release Section 106 developer contributions to cover the estimated £1.25 million construction costs.
Very little alteration of the building, which already has planning permission, is required to accommodate two classes and a nursery unit said Vera.
Vera holding the Redhouse Community Centre plans with fellow St Andrew’s ward councillor Mary Friend, parent Gemma McCracken and Jane Leo.
“It was a battle to get cabinet to agree that North Swindon is very badly served for community meeting places. But I’m really pleased that the centre is to be used as a school because there is a desperate need for more places.
“It means the community centre is going to be built at last, perhaps sooner than many expected.
“The diocese can use the building as long as required; they need to get the Tadpole Farm school right and don’t have to rush."
