Nova Hreod recently held a free open day last week, structured for people to drop in at anytime. Free multi sports activities were provided for children, giving adults a chance to browse over 20 stands with providers on hand to discuss their services/activities.
Informal chats and demonstrations were conducted throughout the day in a very relaxed environment. Information was also available to take away.
The day was designed to be a fun, social, relaxed event for the whole community. It was also to make the local community aware of what is on their doorstep or what could be, showcasing facilities for hire within local schools from John Laing.
There was a wide range of stands and demonstrations from some of the providers on the staged area. These demonstrations included art, Salsa dancing, healthy cooking on a budget, storytelling and arts and crafts, massage, Tae Kwon Doe, applying make up and a gardening tutor demonstrated making ‘Pig Planters’. There was also information on learning Spanish, Poetry and DIY.
In addition there were representatives from New College, Swindon College, U3A, Connexions and North Wessex Training providing adult learning and returning to work opportunities and courses for all sorts of subjects. Local neighbourhood wardens, family support workers and Moredon Children’s centre staff were available with details on services and activities offered locally, including ‘managing your finances’ courses. Visitors could also find out more about becoming involved with various projects such as International links, computer/IT opportunities, gardening and Café Scientifique, and the activities and opportunities offered via the Extended School Services Coordinators.
The event was organised jointly by the Extended School Services team in North Swindon, Swindon Borough Council Adult Learning Directorate and John Laing, managers of the North Swidnon schools in the PFI programme.
