Tom Smith, eight, from Oakhurst Primary School in Swindon, was at an awards ceremony in central London on 23 June to collect a prestigious national prize, as part of a scheme to encourage children to walk to school.
The Living Streets WoW (Walk once a Week) scheme is a simple, exciting scheme that helps schools and local authorities to promote walking to school throughout the entire school year. Children get a badge when they walk to school at least once a week for a month, and the kooky designs have become collector’s items in playgrounds across the country. Each set of badges is designed by WoW pupils themselves, and the competition this year was intense, with over 1,800 entries from over 600 schools around the UK.
This year pupils from across the country showcased their artistic flair by designing 2011-2012’s WoW badges around the theme of Sport. Despite stiff competition, Tom Smith’s diving design was selected by a panel of judges and will be made into a badge that will take pride of place on the jumpers of thousands of school children across the country. The 11 winners each received a personalised trophy at an Awards Ceremony in London on 23 June and enjoyed a day out at the London Transport Museum.
Tony Armstrong, Chief Executive of Living Streets, said: “This year we asked pupils across the UK to design WoW badges around the theme of Sport. The standard of entries was extremely high, so it’s a great credit to have won against such stiff opposition.
“Walking to school is one of the best ways to get everyday activity into families’ lives, helping our health and also making sure we’re not contributing to unnecessary pollution and congestion. It’s also a great way to spend real quality time with your children. We want even more schools and families to take part this year, and details of how to get involved can be found on our website. Let’s hope these fantastic badges inspire even more pupils to get into the walking habit!”
