Sir Steve Redgrave, five times Olympic Gold Medallist, was at Haydonleigh Primary School in Swindon today as an ambassador for Matalan Sporting Promise and to celebrate the great PE activities available for local school children. He was impressed with what he saw: “It has been a really enjoyable morning and it’s fantastic to see the kids having so much fun. In these difficult economic times it would be easy to see how PE and school sport could become less of a priority, but sport has a unique ability to transform young lives and that is why I am so delighted to be able to support the Matalan Sporting Promise programme.”
Matalan Sporting Promise supports sports and PE activity in schools, working in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust. There are two parts to the campaign – Matalan TOP Sport, which is designed for primary education at Key Stage 2 level and will be in 3,000 schools by the end of 2011 with 15,000 teachers trained as part of this. The aspiration is to cover all primary schools in the UK over the next few years. The second programme, Matalan yoUR Activity, concentrates on secondary schools and young people who may not want to take up traditional mainstream sports. Hundreds of secondary schools are signed up already and their pupils now have the chance to try activities like Parkour, Street Cheer and Jump Rope.
Adam Brock, PE Co-Ordinator at Haydonleigh School was there to coordinate the day’s activity and is very enthusiastic about the programme: “Matalan Sporting Promise, and in particular Matalan TOP Sport for our primary school, is such a brilliant resource for teachers and pupils. We’ve all loved the PE lessons this summer and it has been really exciting to have Sir Steve here today to get involved in the sessions and to show his support. We’re looking forward to continuing Matalan TOP Sport with our young people in the new school year ahead.”
More information on Matalan Sporting Promise is available in Matalan stores and online. Matalan and the Youth Sport Trust are now planning the 2012 programme and teachers and parents who would like to register their interest in having Matalan Sporting Promise at their school should go to www.sportingpromise.co.uk..
Jo Sole, Store Manager for the Matalan store in Swindon said: “Matalan is committed to getting more young people taking part in more sport and I’m delighted to see the Matalan TOP Sport programme working so well here at Haydonleigh. We really want to strengthen our relationships with the local schools and it’s not just for the children either, their parents will receive great offers in their local store!”
