The Community Foundation for Wiltshire & Swindon has joined up with theBigGive.org.uk to give people across the county the opportunity to support their local community through on-line donations. The Community Foundation supports voluntary groups and charitable organisations across Wiltshire and Swindon, raising funds locally from individuals, companies and trusts. The Big Give is a free to use website that helps donors quickly and discreetly find charity projects in their field of interest. A recent national campaign saw £2 million donated to charity in just 45 minutes through The Big Give.
The Community Foundation are hoping for donations to their Gold Fund for Older People. Funding is much harder to find for projects working with older people than for other causes, indeed, research has shown that for every one pound given to charities working with older people, two pounds is donated to children’s charities and three pounds to animal charities. People can donate on-line and donations will be matched, so a donation of £10 can become £40.
Development Director Jon Yates said ”Voluntary organisations can be a lifeline for older people who can easily become isolated and vulnerable. The Gold Fund gives us a resource to use to support groups in towns and in rural parts of the county. So far this fund has made grants of
£7,350 to groups dealing with a range of issues, from providing support for people with Alzheimer’s Disease and their families to groups organising weekly lunch clubs, which is the only outing of the week for many of the members."
One such group are Dressability in Swindon who have used a Community Foundation grant to set up a quilting group which provides older people in the area with valuable social contact as well as giving them the opportunity to learn new skills.
Alzheimer’s Support in Trowbridge provide a range of flexible services to support people with Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias and their carers in Kennet and West Wiltshire. Their Community Foundation grant supported their Relief Care Service providing relief for the carer, and companionship and stimulation for the sufferer in their own home.
