West Swindon Neighbourhood Police team joint manager PC Steve Yeates took a no-compromise approach to parents parking outside Oliver Tomkins Primary School, Toothill before Christmas.
For years the school has sent letters to parents asking them not to park outside on the double S bend of Beaumaris Road. Letters from PC Yeates at the beginning of term did not deter people from parking in the wrong place, including the sacrosanct zig-zag lines on either side of the zebra crossing installed several years ago.
Having patrolled the school entrance for several days advising parents to keep their cars away from the entrance, PC Yeates said he had to act. “I really didn’t want to start giving people tickets but some drivers just were not listening to what I was saying about parking in a dangerous way. Beaumaris Road at school drop off and pick up time is totally congested and parked cars make the area unsafe for parents and children walking to school. Unfortunately there were persistent offenders and I’m afraid action was required.”
The word soon spread once penalty notices were given out and drivers no longer park outside the school. PC Yeates said he would continue his daily patrols until double yellow lines are put down in April.
