Wiltshire Police escorted a slow moving abnormal load along the M4 on 16 November, passing between junction 15 and 16 to the south of the town between at 12.30pm and 2pm.
The specialised load transporter measured 4.87 metres (16ft) wide, 4.98 m (16ft-04ins) high and had an overall length of 89.67 m (294 ft). The gross weight of 637.80 tonnes was disbursed across multiple sets of wheels.
There was substantial congestion on the westbound carriageway, with tailbacks estimated to be around 13 miles at 1pm.
The load turned off at junction 18 onto the A46 where there was significant delay until about 4pm when it reached its destination.
Police escorting resources were provided by volunteer officers on rest days, paid for by the haulier at no cost to the public.
