Hundreds of people visited the long awaited community building at The Circle, Pinehurst on 21 December when the Mayor of Swindon Ray Ballman and North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson cut the opening ribbon.
The much-needed £2 million community centre replaces Pinehurst People’s Centre which was knocked down in 2007 to make way for The Academy. However residents launched a campaign in 2009 to pressure Swindon Council to deliver on promises made during the consultation and planning of the new secondary school in 2005.
Jessica Bascombe, chairman of the Pinetrees Steering Group said it was wonderful that the battle had been won. “The community has had to argue long and hard for the promised community centre; now we have it right in the heart of the Pinehurst community. It’s great to see so many people at the opening. Now the battle we have is getting people to take ownership of the centre and feel that it is their own.”
Pinetrees Community Centre was completed by Swindon Commercial Services on time and on budget. Pinehurst and Gorse Hill councillor and this year’s mayor of Swindon Ray Ballman said: “It’s super to see a centre in our community. It’s been greatly need since the old People’s Centre was demolished. The council has delivered on its promises’ now I hope the people of Pinehurst will make the most of their building.”
Swindon Council will hand over responsibility for it in April to a group of trustees; a management steering group is currently learning the ropes.
The two-storey centre stands on the site of the former Pinetrees residential home on The Circle. On the ground floor, there is an internet cafe, kitchen, two NHS dental rooms, two rentable meeting rooms, a library, a Citizens Advice Bureau, reception and toilets.
