The west sector of the town is one of four areas in Wiltshire where a new police messaging service.
An intitiative by the Police and Crime Commissioner Angus Macpherson, Wiltshire and Swindon Community Messaging will allow the police to send out alerts directly to people’s computers and mobile devices – whether they are in recognised neighbourhood watch areas or not.
Apart from messages warning of illegal activity in a neighbourhood, or people to look out for, crime prevention advice can also be sent out.
“The whole thing will be co-ordinated from the neighbourhood alert website. Our crime issues go across boundaries so they can link into that.
West sector inspector Martyn Sweet stressed the cost for the service is not being paid for by the front line of policing budget. He said: “This is being funded by the Police and Crime Commissioner budget; it is a small amount of money to get set up, with no additional costs incurred.”
