Create Studios will be showcasing original pop and rap music which has been created by more than 80 young people from Parks over the Summer and Autumn, with participants launching the new CD at St John’s Church on Thursday 11 November.
Working with industry Record Producer, Barry Andrews of Create Studios, participants from age 8 upwards have experimented with music on mac computers and then been supported to refine their songs ready to be recorded on Swindon’s fantastic mobile studio, The Createmobile (pictured right).
The striking airstream vehicle is an important part of Create’s outreach work, taking exciting new digital technology to all of Swindon’s communities. Create aims to inspire positive involvement by young people and build a thirst for learning new skills in the participants they work with. The Createmobile generated lots of interest over the Summer, adding to the local landscape 2 days a week in Cavendish Square. In response to the demand, Create delivered a regular follow up music club in Parks which has run over the autumn.
Create Studios Manager, Shahina Johnson says: “Young people in Parks have loved having the Createmobile in the estate. Our work is all about making changes in people’s lives by giving them creative opportunities to try something new and build confidence in their own abilities.”
The Parks project, Power Play: Swindon, has been funded by Youth Music, whose Power Play programme aims to support music making with young people in challenging places, and been planned in partnership with the Neighbourhood team in Parks.
Youth Music’s Regional Executive Officer for the South West (North) Jo Beal says, “Youth Music wants to see young people developing their skills, talent and potential through music making. The Power Play: Swindon project has captured the imagination of the community and we hope these could be the first steps in a longer enjoyment of music making.”
Joe, who has been a regular on the Createmobile says, “This has been a fantastic opportunity for me to develop my music making. It’s like I’ve always been waiting for this to happen, and now I want to do more!”
The work produced in Parks over the summer and autumn has been collated into a free CD called PowerPlay: Swindon featuring 11 new tracks, and is available from Create Studios.
Create Studios is part of Swindon Borough Council’s Culture Swindon Team.
