Prospect Hospice’s biggest fundraiser of the year is back for 2011. And with a new route and venue, this year’s event looks set to be bigger and better than ever before.
The Starlight Walk, once again supported by Nationwide Building Society, is Swindon’s biggest local-charity mass participation event. Last year saw over 700 ladies taking to the streets of Swindon to raise nearly £80,000 for the Hospice. This year, the organisers are hoping to break all attendance and fundraising records with their biggest and brightest walk yet.
It all takes place on Saturday 18 June, this year from a new venue – the Croft Sports Centre.
Sheryl Crouch, head of Fundraising, said: “The Starlight Walk is a fantastic evening which always gets really well supported by the community in terms of volunteers, the police, the general public and of course the ladies who participate. Like last year, we’ll have two routes of 10k and 15k, hopefully offering a challenge to all abilities, and it should be a really fun night.
"As well as the ladies taking part in the walk we also welcome support from men who would like to steward at the event.
“Of course, there’s a serious side to the Starlight Walk as well, and that is to raise as much money as we can to pay for the care we offer. Our services are completely free to all who need them, but they cost £5m last year, seventy percent of which we have to raise ourselves with the support of our community through fundraisers like the Starlight Walk.
“This year we’re setting off from a brand new venue – the Croft Sports Centre. The great thing about using Croft is that the two walks will now go past the Hospice, which we haven’t done on a Starlight Walk before.
“We’re asking everyone who’s taken part before to register again this year, and help us make this year’s the best ever. And if you haven’t taken part before then what are you waiting for?”
Annette Kerlin, Nationwide’s head of corporate responsibility said: “We are pleased to be able to support the Starlight Walk for a third year and are proud to be involved in an event which has such a positive impact on the community.”
