Local people are invited to learn more about dementia from a local expert at a special open evening being held on Wednesday 6 March, 6.30pm until 7.30pm, Lecture Hall 1, The Academy, Great Western Hospital.
Members of the public and staff are welcome to attend the free talk by Dr Mukherjee, Consultant Physician, who is an expert in elderly medicine, with over 18 years experience caring for patients with dementia. He is particularly interested in movement disorders, such as Parkinson’s Disease and Multi-System Atrophy.
One in three people over the age of 65 develop dementia, so we will all encounter people with dementia at some point, whether at work, out and about or in our personal lives. It is estimated that there are 8,656 people living with dementia across Swindon and Wiltshire and by 2021 the number is expected to increase by 40%, to over 12,000 people.
Claire Litchfield, Membership Officer at the Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Our Trust is full of doctors, nurse and other healthcare professionals who are experts on health conditions which affect hundreds of people every day, such as dementia. The aim of our health talks is to share this wealth of knowledge with local people so they can learn more about various conditions and how to manage them. Everyone is welcome, you don’t need to book, just come along.”
This is the first of a series of talks being held by the Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust on a range of high profile health issues which were chosen by members of the Trust. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the expert and ask questions. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided.
Anyone who lives in the area, works for the Trust, or has been a patient or service user, can register as a member of the Trust for free. The Trust already has 12,000 members who can have their say on patient services, influence decisions and receive regular updates on the latest developments.
