Westlea Primary School’s fundraising chairperson Penny Atherton is leaving her post after nine years of organising all sorts of events to raise money for the school – and what better swan song than a proper Big Top on the school field on Monday 2 June?
Commenting on her decision to bring a circus to West Swindon, Penny said: “I wanted to go out with a bang and just fancied organising something a bit different. We’d already planned a circus theme for the summer fair later in the year, then I thought it would be nice to have a real circus at the school.
“Often it’s quite expensive to go to the circus and lots of children in West Swindon don’t have the opportunity. Hopefully the ticket price will make it possible for families to enjoy this great community event together. It will be something children will remember forever.”
In her time as fundraising chair Penny has been responsible for lots of events and activities that have made on average £10,000 to £15,000 a year for school funds. She said: “We’ve had sleepovers, Christmas and Summer fairs, school discos, calendars and year books.
"We’ve also done children’s christmas shopping events which are always been brilliantly supported by local businesses, supplying gifts that children can purchase themselves for their mum and dad, and our annual Bonfire Night event is always really popular.”
Researching her inspired idea, Penny trawled the internet looking for a circus troupe that could perform on the school field and and found Happy’s Circus from Eastleigh in Hampshire. “It will be exciting to watch the Big Top go up during the day," said Penny. "The billing is very traditional with clowns, daring trapeze artists, sword and dagger acts, magical illusions, and speciality acts from as far afield as China and Ukraine.”
The circus will open to the public and tickets are on sale from Westlea Primary School office during school hours.
Gates open at 4.45 on Monday 2 June for BBQ and side stalls, with the circus performance commencing at 6pm.
Tickets cost 8 for children, £10 for adults or £32 for a family ticket for 2 adults and 2 children. With one show, the number of tickets on offer for this memorable show are limited.
Book early by contacting the office at Westlea Primary School, Langstone Way, Westlea, or call 01793 870469.
