A personal trainer based in Swindon is preparing to lead by example by undertaking a 50-mile run to mark her 50th birthday.
Sue O’Connell of SOLEAN – which stands for Sue O’Connell Lifestyle Exercise and Nutrition – will be tackling the Thames Trot 50 in February.
She said: “In 2014 I will hit the big five-O, and I wanted a challenge to really push me beyond anything I have achieved so far and to launch my second half-century with a flourish.
“I have run a couple of marathons in the past and found those no easy undertaking, but I needed something that would surpass the London Marathon and Moonwalks.
“I did some research on running ultras – that’s any long-distance event longer than the marathon’s 26.2 miles – and I am lucky enough to know a couple of people who do them regularly, so I have been able to get lots of useful advice and tips.
“Very often I look at my training plan and wonder if an ultra-marathon is a crazy thing to be doing at my age. The comforting upshot of my research is that it’s a pretty crazy thing to be doing at any age.”
Sue said she is hoping to inspire others to set themselves new challenges. “If you need some help achieving a sporting or fitness goal, get in touch for a free consultation on training programmes and motivation, or a nutritional assessment.”
