I’M not quite sure why everyone seems to be slagging off Poole but I guess, speaking as an outsider, it’s because they have more success than any other club in England.
People say that Matt Ford is paying people off or that they are trying to make the rules around themselves but it’s not like that, they’re just so clever in the way they put their teams together.
You’ve seen it this year with Milik. Nobody probably even thought about Milik but he’s been one of the best newcomers of the league this year.
You can always accuse them of fiddling with things but they’re just trying to do the best for their club, which is what anyone would do.
Looking over the season they lost Grajczonek and Ward and had Maciej, Milik and Pawlicki injured but still won the league. On paper they were better and stronger with the full team rather than with the guests they had, so how big would the their win in the final have been if they had their full seven riders?
They’re clearly the team who deserved it the most in my opinion.
The only negative thing I ever really hear riders say about Poole is that, because he’s always trying to build the best team, Matt can promise too many riders a shot at a team place before the season. Then, obviously, for some of them he can’t keep his promises.
I’ve not been in that situation before but know others who have, and they’ve been talked about for a place but then a few months before the season, once they’ve said no to a couple of other offers, he comes and says he can’t offer them a place.
That is very unfortunate but that’s how he plays his cards. Other than that I’ve not heard any negativity from riders who have been down there.
It’s a great club. I’ve never heard a single rider say they’re owed any money, they have good, helpful, sponsors down there who help the riders out a lot and they have great fans.
They have a great stadium too but the only thing that isn’t as good as it used to be is the track.
For foreign riders it’s one of the better places because they fly in and out, but for Grajczonek who lives in Manchester it’s a really long way to drive to and from every Wednesday. The fact he does it shows it must be a really good club to ride for.
I think any team who wins it year after year would be slated, I think that’s just how it is.
