Two significant works by artist L.S. Lowry are being displayed at an exhibition in the heart of Swindon town centre’s commercial district. Swindon Borough Council is hosting the public exhibition at property group Amalgamated Berkshire’s virtually re-built central-Swindon office property, Station Square.
Core values of energy efficiency, sustainability and style were the focus of Amalgamated Berkshire’s works to Station Square, achieving a rating via BREEAM – the world’s foremost environmental assessment method for buildings – as "very good".
Lowry’s Winter in Pendlebury and A Procession paintings is the centrepiece of this select exhibition of Swindon Borough Council’s art collection, widely considered to be one of the best collections of 20th Century British art in the country.
Lowry’s pictures are joined by works by other respected British artists, including John Piper and Alfred Wallis.
The exhibition is complemented by images by members of Swindon Photography Society. Pictured right, young member Jodie Henderson.
Cllr Garry Perkins, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Culture, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase some of the gems in our art collection to people in Swindon. It is also a chance to gain an exclusive look at two of Lowry’s exemplary works prior to Tate Britain’s Lowry and the Painting of Modern Life exhibition this summer. This exhibition will give us an even greater incentive to find a new permanent home for our art collection and I would encourage people to pop along to Station Square to see some of 20th Century Britain’s best works of art."
Christopher Meredith of Savills, the letting agents for Station Square, said: "Amalgamated Berkshire’s accommodation of this exhibition in Station Square provides the unique opportunity for people to see the work of a world famous artist in the surroundings of the highest quality and most cost-efficient office space available in Swindon."
