On Wednesday 23 January, Basepoint Swindon will host a free breakfast seminar with SEQOL energy2work, so the local business community can learn more about how disabled people in the area are being helped into employment.
SEQOL energy2work is a social enterprise that provides support to people who have a disability or health condition through its supported employment programme. The programme includes a variety of courses designed to teach people with disabilities new skills that will improve their chances of future employment prospects, as well as offering support to businesses that decide to employ someone who has a disability or health condition.
Lyn Chapman, centre manager at Basepoint Swindon, commented: “Unfortunately, for many disabled people there are real barriers that prevent them from gaining employment. When they do succeed, the benefits can be significant, not only for them as individuals, but also for their employers. We hope people will leave the seminar with a new perspective on what it’s like to hire someone with a disability.”
Ann King, SEQOL energy2work’s project manager, adds: “Although disabled people make valuable employees, unfortunately they are less likely to be employed. In fact, less than 50 per cent of disabled people are in work and only seven per cent of people with learning disabilities manage to find jobs. We know that local employers who have worked with SEQOL energy2work have been amazed at the pool of talent that they can draw on, and have been delighted with the benefits that these enthusiastic and talented people are bringing to their businesses. This is a great chance for employers to learn how they may be able to draw on skills, abilities and experience that they may otherwise miss out on – and how SEQOL energy2work can support them along the way. We are very grateful to Basepoint for hosting this event for the Swindon business community.”
The seminar is taking place at Basepoint Swindon at Rivermead Drive, West Swindon, on Wednesday 23 January from 8.30am – 9.30am. The seminar is free and open to all employers and their representatives, but space is limited.
