Steve defies all odds to run London Marathon for the Children’s Trust
Despite suffering a knee injury during training sessions, a local Vauxhall employee is defying all odds by embarking on the 26.2mile challenge of the London Marathon.
32 year-old Steve Hammill, New Car Group Retailer Manager at Skurrays Vauxhall, has been training hard during the countdown to the sporting event on 21 April, to help raise money for the Children’s Trust.
His biggest fans!
Running enthusiast and family-man Steve is planning on taking the route in his stride, thanks to the support of his colleagues at the dealership – and his biggest fans- his children Yasmin and Oliver (pictured right).
With a couple of fundraising half marathons already under his belt, Steve is ready to face his biggest challenge yet, with the aim of raising £1800 for the worthwhile cause.
The Southampton born fitness fanatic has already raised £1400 by enlisting the help of his children to produce delicious treats in countless bake sales at the dealership.
Steve comments: “After injuring my knee during training sessions, I have been resting so as not to damage it further. My only hope is my knee is in tip-top condition for the marathon, but I’m determined to cross the finish line whether I run or walk the entire way!
“Raising money for children’s charities is very important to me and I would like to thank everyone who is supporting me and making this all worthwhile.”
Nick Plevey, Managing Director at the dealership, with sites in Swindon and Oxford, is also backing Steve: “Steve has incredible willpower to take on the London Marathon. We are all very proud of him and we will be there to cheer him at every step on the way.”
Steve’s intense training regime kick-started in January – and with 60 miles run collectively in February, and 80 miles plus the Silverstone Half Marathon run in March, the training has been relentless. The Retailer Manager’s day often starts at 5:00am with a three hour run, followed by a full shift at the dealership, before spending well-deserved time with his partner and young children – in between many evenings spent baking for a cake sale.
