As part of their 50th anniversary year, on Sunday, 17 May 2009, Swindon Fire station are providing a fun filled day at RAF Hullavington airfield to give women the chance to drive a once in a lifetime variety of large and unusual vehicles in the ‘Ladies Driving Challenge’. Participants will be able to try their hand at manoeuvring a range of different vehicles including Fire Engines, Police Cars, Ambulances, JCBs, Articulated Lorries, Buses, Coaches and possibly even a Tank, all kindly donated by local organisations.
The 'Ladies Driving Challenge’ promises to be an exciting day, with a chance to drive a fantastic collection of vehicles often associated with male drivers. The women only Challenge is relaxed with the focus on handling vehicles with skill and enjoying new experiences, as well as raising money for a good cause.
Ladies over the age of 17 with a full Driving Licence are welcome to join in the fun during either the morning or afternoon sessions. Registration costs £10 and entrants are asked to raise a minimum of £90 in sponsorship. Prizes will be awarded to entrants achieving set sponsorship targets, including limited edition T-shirts, teddies and firefighter experience days. All proceeds from the event will go to the Fire Fighters Charity.
Behind the fun, there is a very serious message that we are supporting the firefighters who risk their lives. When they run into a burning building, there is always the real risk of serious injury, and when the worst happens it’s not only the fire fighters who suffer, but also their families. The Charity is the only charity dedicated to supporting firefighters and their families in times of need and helping to speed their recovery back to operational duty. Over the last 5 years 13 firefighters have been killed and approx 13,000 are treated for injuries of different kinds every year.
Although only the ladies are able to take part in the challenge, other activities will be going on throughout the day, making it an ideal event to bring along your family or friends. Further details will be enclosed in the registration pack.
To take part in the ‘Ladies Driving Challenge’, entrants should register online through the Firefighters Charity web site: www.ladiesdrivingchallenge.co.uk or request a registration pack from Mike on 07717 895424
