The story of Viv Nicholson and her husband Keith who won £152,000 on the football pools in the late 1950’s is well chronicled. When asked by the newspaper reporters what she was going to do with her winnings, Viv’s reaction was that she was going to “Spend spend spend.” And that is precisely what she did.
Her winnings were the equivalent of £5m today, so for a young couple living on the breadline in a coal mining community, struggling to bring up three children, with another on the way, it was riches beyond their wildest dreams – and they had no idea how to handle it.
Fifteen years and five husbands later, Viv was broke, and wishing she had never seen the money.
A Chocolate Theatre’s musical adaptation is based on her book, which Viv co-wrote with author Stephen Smith.
This musical drama is fast-paced, vibrant, gritty and irresistible.
SPEND SPEND SPEND is a gritty story, told almost entirely in song and runs the gamut of emotions. There is fun, exuberance, jealousy, envy, tragedy & romance.
