Jan Miller, Premier Sport’s Physical Activity and Sports coordinator, is backing a nationwide fitness initiative called The Golden Mile to get children across Swindon physically active within the safety of the school grounds.
Jan’s commitment means primary schools across Swindon can get involved free of charge.
The Golden Mile has been used by thousands of primary school children across the UK and now Jan is offering The Golden Mile to school across the town.
The Golden Mile was officially launched on 27 March at Holy Rood Junior School, but Jan has been offering sessions at Red Oaks Primary School in North Swindon for several weeks.
The initiative is a simple way of inspiring schools to engage in physical activity through walking, jogging, running or cycling 10, 25 or 50 miles throughout the school year.
The emphasis is on fun, rewarding personal achievement, pupil leadership, competition and raising money. The activity is totally inclusive and can be done with friends or parents before during or after school hours.
Jan is also using The Golden Mile to monitor children via a ‘Base Line Measurement’ (BLM) which identifies fitness levels and will even provide a comprehensive report looking at key stages, particular classes, sex, and proportion of disengaged vs. sporty children.
The Golden Mile offers schools provides measurable solutions to support head teachers in delivering new Ofsted requirements via a very simple online system.
Jan, who used to teach at Nova Hreod School said: “The Golden Mile is a great tool for empowering the older pupils to manage the initiative for the whole school responding to the needs of individual schools through a training programme that focuses on pupils and encourages them to take more responsibility for developing active, healthy playgrounds for all through collaborative play’ whilst reducing the burden on teachers time.
"The Golden Mile focuses on the development of the whole child, promoting integration and co-operation between children of all ages and their counterparts.
"As a community investment I am offering The Golden Mile initiative free to all primary schools in the area who would like to use it. As well as this, I’ll visit schools and conduct Base Line Measurement reports for all pupils.”
