There’s a lively mix of history, culture and family fun to be had over the Diamond Jubilee weekend and Whitsun Half-Term holiday at STEAM – Museum of the Great Western Railway.
To kick off the special week, former GWR drivers, firemen and signalmen will be bringing the Great Western Railway story to life on Saturday 2 June between 10.00 am and 4.00 pm. Visitors will be invited to climb aboard the famous Caerphilly Castle and Lode Star locomotives and to learn how these great machines worked.
Two days of Diamond Jubilee craft activities will take place next to STEAM’s Royal Road Exhibition on the museum’s Station Platform.
Creating colourful and inventive hats, crowns and flags will be the flavour of the day on Monday 4 June as families drop in to the free sessions running throughout the day.
And cake decorating experts from the Cupcake Passion Company will be at hand on Tuesday 5 June to offer advice as families and friends try their hand at the art of cupcake decorating at special workshops taking place between 10am and 4.30pm.
All of the special activities mentioned above are included with standard admission.
The Smiley Cats Kidz Club is also back for the holidays with morning sessions on 6 and 7 June. Characters from the Madagascar movie will be explored through creative crafts and games and sessions run between 9.30am and 1pm. A supervised tour of the museum and healthy mid-morning snacks are included in the cost of £12.00 or £9.50 with a Swindoncard. Spaces need to be booked in advance by calling Smiley Cats on 01793 700221 or 07802 537876 or visit: www.smileycats.co.uk
To complete the Diamond Jubilee experience, STEAM’s Royal Road Exhibition, below, offers a fascinating glimpse into royal life on the railways and explores the Great Western Railway’s royal connections. Displays inside the exhibition include unique material from Queen Victoria’s reign, right up to the present day of Queen Elizabeth II. There is also a fun Royal Road Activity Trail for children to follow – available for a small charge or free to download from the STEAM website.
To keep energy levels up, STEAM’s new Platform One Café serves freshly prepared meals, snacks and drinks and is open between 10am and 5pm every day.
