A lady who has played the church organ in Shaw for over 35 years was given a surprise birthday party at the Hongxin Oriental Buffet on 12 April.
Val Hemmens, pictured centre wearing scarf, thought she was going out to see four friends she regularly meets at the Chinese restaurant in Peatmoor.
Her attention was distracted as she walked through the front door and it wasn’t until staff was showing her to her table that she realised there were over 30 friends and family already there to wish her a happy seventieth birthday.
“I was totally surprised to see how many friends had wanted to join me,” said Val. “It was a lovely way to celebrate a birthday.”
Val has been playing the organ at Holy Trinity Church, Shaw Centre since it opened in 1989. Before that she played in the old chapel in Old Shaw Lane.
