TILLY Gray doesn’t think a three-week break from training will have too long lasting an effect ahead of her return to the pool this week.
The former Commonweal School student has spent the best part of a month away from her intense schedule, taking the chance to relax in Tunisia and reflect on a turbulent past year during which she bounced between coaches and pools and had to qualify for the Commonwealth Games twice.
Now, back in the comfort of her university digs in Bath and preparing to get back in the water, Gray is convinced she’ll settle straight back into her old routine.
“With the month off and the tapering off, it does feel I’ve been off for quite a while. I’ve been maintaining my gym work for pretty much the whole of the summer, building a lot of strength – which is hard to do in the pool,” she told Link Sport.
“I’ve been eating really well and getting strength from outside the pool. I did a few 2,000m out in Tunisia and it didn’t feel too bad at all so I think I should be fairly quick to get back into things.
“I’d like to be within three per cent of my PB by Christmas. That’s what we aim for. We’ve got targets from the last year – I just want to be quicker in every race than I was this time last year. I want to be going 2.12s or quicker in every heat swim so I know I can hit fast swims at international competitions.
“Hopefully with a bit of stability I’ll be back to where I was last year.”
