Diana Dors was a worldwide movie star, but we’re not sure whether the Swindon-born actress ever made it to Hong Kong… until now, writes Graham Carter, editor of Swindon Heritage magazine.
When Link publisher Roger Ogle visited the Far East, he took a copy of the summer edition of Swindon Heritage with him, featuring Diana on the cover, and just had to make the connection with one of the local landmarks in Kowloon.
Founded in 1918, the Swindon Book Co changed its name in 1936 when it became fashionable for Eastern companies to incorporate the name of Western cities.
The shop was close to the major railway terminus in Kowloon and its owner saw the connection with Swindon’s GWR heritage.
A Swindon shop much closer to home will feature in the winter edition of Swindon Heritage due for publication in mid-November.
McIlroy’s department store closed in 1998 after 123 years of trading in Regent Street, and the magazine will include memories of its heyday, including from its last manager.
The 84-page magazine, which costs £4.99, will be available at local outlets, including the Central Library. Back copies and subscriptions can be bought online via www.swindonheritage.com
