Studios open in and around Swindon over the weekends of 10th/11th, 17th/18th & 24th/25th June.
Swindon’s third Open Studios is now running, providing showcase for artists in an around the town, displaying work in a wide range of mediums, from fine art drawings to abstracts in both acrylics and oils, through to ceramics.
Despite an excellent response from artists in 2004 and 2005, last year’s open studios was cancelled due to a potential reshuffle of Swindon Council’s Art Services division. Many artists were forced to look elsewhere for events to promote their work, but in response to a need for Swindon to hold its own visual art event the Council and Artsminds have collaborated this year to revive the Open Studios. What started with only four artists has now grown to over forty.
Meeting the artists in their studios gives visitors an opportunity to meet, learn about their techniques and discuss ideas. There are a range of items to buy from postcards to finished work, but there is no pressure and interested browsers are welcome.
Shanta Barber who is coordinating this year’s event with the help of Barbara Dixon, the Swindon’s visual arts officer, moved to Swindon last year from Hong Kong. Shanta said that she was “delighted to find such a wealth of high quality artistic talent in the town”.
The artists participating this year are as varied as their work. From professional artists such as sculptor Pat Elmore, right, Deana Kim Page, Jennifer Bailey and David Bent to amateur and emerging artists from all walks of life like Damien Daly, Belinda Gizzi and Scott McGrath.
Exhibition space available There were many artists in Swindon who wanted to get involved in this year’s event, but did not have studios to open. So Shanta has organised an additional exhibition for the 24th/25th June to promote the work of these artists at the Community Crossroads (previously the Old Railway Museum) in Fleet Street.
There are still places available for this exhibition which is open to artists in Swindon and the surrounding areas. For details contact Shanta on 0797 3442071 or email: email@example.com
