The school holidays are here and it isn’t just butterflies waiting for visitors to Studley Grange Butterfly World, near Wroughton.
There are many new – and very cute – arrivals in the small animal paddock as well as the popular favourites.
Three Meerkat pups were born in May and are growing up fast while four orphan lambs which arrived in April and May have settled in well. Three Black Orpington rare breed fowl and a Sulcata tortoise are also new to the animal paddock this summer. The latest newcomers are 30 ex-battery hens which are enjoying retirement at Studley Grange after a lifetime in cages. All this plus otters, goats, pigs, guinea pigs, lizards, snakes, turtles, birds and much more.
More caterpillars than ever before have been appearing in both greenhouses; meaning even more beautiful butterflies flying and hiding among the leaves.
Under the guidance of new manager Jackie Guscott, several areas at Studley Grange Butterfly World have been updated, with new planting in the greenhouses and new information signs provided to help visitors learn about butterflies and the other animals.
These cute – and rather muddy – babies are the very latest arrivals at Studley Grange Butterfly World and are part of its continued support of rare breeds.
The sow and 10 piglets, which are just a week old, are British Saddlebacks and are on loan to Studley Grange Butterfly World from Muddy Lane Pigs in Chippenham. They will be enjoying life in their enclosures throughout the school holidays and visitors will be able to learn about why the breed is rare and the importance of other rare breed animals in the UK.
British Saddleback Pigs were created in the 20th Century from two other breeds, the Essex and Wessex Saddleback. They are hardy and noted for being good mothers.
Don’t forget, a great time to see the meerkats and otters is feeding time – 11.30, 13.30 and 15.30 daily. At weekends and school holidays there is also reptile handling (for children over the age of 5) at 12.30; meet a guinea pig, goat or pig at 14.30; and butterfly talks at 11am and 2pm.
Studley Grange Butterfly World is just off junction 16 of the M4.
