The generosity of Swindon theatregoers, combined with the fundraising efforts of Wyvern Theatre staff have helped HQ Theatres and Qdos Entertainment raise £93,068.14 for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity’s Theatres for Theatres Appeal.
The money was raised through audience bucket collections as well as a number of fundraising events in which HQ Theatre staff have taken part, between October 2010 and the end of March 2011. At the Wyvern Theatre this has included bucket appeals; the theatre will also be putting Great Ormond Street Hospital collections at the heart of the Theatre’s 40th anniversary celebrations later this year. On 3 September the Theatre is having a special Open Day with proceeds raised on the day going towards the appeal.
The Great Ormond Street Hospital’s Theatres for Theatres Appeal aims to raise £4 million towards the construction of two brand-new state-of-the-art operating theatres to be used for children from all parts of the UK who require specialist neurosurgery.
The Hospital’s neurosciences team treat over 8,000 children and carry out around 750 operations each year. Over the next 10 years the team expect even more referrals from other hospitals. The demand for neurosurgery already outstrips current capacity and the two new theatres will mean that they can treat up to 20% more children.
All nine theatres and venues in the HQ Theatres and Qdos Entertainment Group, including the Wyvern Theatre, will continue to raise funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital over the next year through audience collections as well as a number of fundraising events, organised by theatre staff, which includes skydiving, running challenges and auctions!
