PRS for Music, the organisation which represents 80,000 songwriters and composers across the UK, has announced that hundreds of charities across the UK have already benefited from its Charity and Community Event Discount Scheme – including in Swindon, Wiltshire – and is now encouraging other charitable organisations to take advantage in 2012.
This year’s Swindon & Wiltshire Pride festival has benefited from the PRS for Music discount entitlement scheme, as this year was the first time that music was played during the Parade and was very successful, attracting more people to join in the party atmosphere. The Pride event held in Old Town Gardens, Swindon attracted over 7,000 people and provided the platform for many to celebrate and promote equality & diversity. The event is all inclusive and is free for everyone to attend.
PRS for Music is encouraging other charity and community event organisers to take advantage of the Scheme, which was introduced in June 2009. The Scheme aims to provide organisers of charity and community events, ranging from small music or folk festivals to large carnivals and fetes, with help in paying for their music licence fee by offering a discount – sometimes up to 100% – in return for advertising.
PRS for Music has extended its open period indefinitely, so that as many groups as possible can benefit. Events are assessed on certain criteria including:
– Any admission charge for the event
– The size of the event and the extent of music use
– The nature of the charity
– The budget for the event
– The licence fee for the event
Keith Gilbert, director of PPS, PRS for Music, said: “Music is a powerful medium that can bring people together in charity and community events. The discount scheme has been set up to help events such as Swindon & Wiltshire Pride, where the cost of a licence may become a barrier to running the event. The application process is simple, and we would like to remind community and charity event organisers to contact us so that we can help them find the best option.”
Adam Lewis, Spokesperson for Pride in Swindon & Wiltshire, said: “A fantastic day was had by all at the Festival and we have had some fantastic feedback from everyone who came down. The support from PRS for Music in giving us a discounted licence was invaluable to ensuring the Parade was such a success and has given us bigger and better ideas for 2012.”
