Cycling in Swindon is about to become a lot more colourful with the announcement of the 2011 Swindon Bicycle Carnival. The event will take place on Saturday 2 July and is based at Lydiard Park where a host of cycling related fun activities are planned as well as a short ride to celebrate the day.
There is a circus theme to the day so get your creative helmets on and start thinking about what to wear or how to dress up your bike. From clowns and mimes to circus animals, or even gymnasts or showgirls; the glitzier and more colourful the better. Prizes will be available for various categories including best individual, best individual under 16 years, and best group (this can be a club, a workplace or just a group of friends in collective costumes.
To show off the various bikes and costumes, a gentle half hour ride will take place through a controlled circuit around west Swindon. The route features some beautiful greenery and will amble along at a leisurely pace soaking up the atmosphere and sunshine. It is suitable for all ages and abilities and will loop back to Lydiard Park to enjoy a celebration of cycling.
Anna Cipullo, CTC Cycling Development Officer for Swindon, and event organiser says, “Thanks to Big Lottery funding, we’re really excited to announce a fun cycling festival for Swindon. It’s a free day out for all the family so come along and enjoy the carnival atmosphere. There’ll be lots of activities as well as the ride so it’s the perfect excuse to get the bike out with the family and get some fresh air. Last year Bristol hosted the UK’s first dedicated pedal-powered carnival with over 600 attendees, and we’re hoping Swindon can beat that!”
