Have you or a loved one experienced pain or chronic fatigue, which on closer examination from your GP or health specialist appears to have no medical explanation? asks Elaine Watts.
It can be extremely distressing for an individual and their families when there is ‘no answer.’ This can leave you feeling powerless, irritated, misunderstood or angry.
The majority of health care providers now recognise that physical symptoms can result from psychological stress.
Functional somatic disorder is a long-term (chronic) condition in which a person has physical symptoms that may involve more than one part of the body, but no physical cause can be found. The pain and other symptoms people with this disorder feel are real, and are not created or faked on purpose. FSD patients are often described as hard-working, overactive with high personal standards and high self-criticism.
People with this disorder can have many physical complaints such as: irritable bowel syndrome, chest pain, diarrhea, insomnia, anxiety, and headaches. Symptoms often interfere with work and relationships.
Stress can be the root to many different disorders and is an underlying factor of functional somatic disorder.
Situations that may seem straightforward such as exams, changing job, relationship difficulties, or a change in family circumstances can have a significant negative impact on our well being.
Finding a mental health provider who has experience treating somatisation disorders with talking therapy (counselling) can be helpful. Counselling may help people who are prone to somatisation learn other ways of dealing with stresses, and this may help reduce the intensity of the symptoms.
I have been working with clients for over 10 years who have experienced stress as a negative and life changing experience. During this time I have witnessed that when an individual has a better understanding of how to manage their stress, their general health and well being can improve significantly.
