The Active Swindon Cycle Challenge, the Swindon Borough Council Challenge which encouraged Swindon employees and residents to take to two wheels, concluded on Saturday 30 June after Swindon workplaces clocked up a total of 41,750 miles – that’s 1.7 times round the world, and 44 return trips from Swindon to New York.
During the Challenge, which ran from 1 to 30 June, Swindon cyclists could access the Challenge website to log details of the trips they’d made by bike on their way to and from work, to the shops, or even on gruelling 100 mile rides. Individual cyclists could accumulate virtual medal awards as they progressed through different mileage categories including ‘Pace Setter’, ‘Race Leader’ and ‘Legend’.
The Swindon Primary Care Trust (PCT) team beat off strong competition from other workplace teams such as BT, Zurich, Arval, WHSmith, Swindon Borough Council and Intel to scoop the number one spot in the organisation leaderboard, with Alcatel-Lucent and Ubiquisys following not far behind in the second and third positions.
The five top teams and five top individual cyclists have been awarded a celebratory meal out together: a great chance to share their collective experiences of the Challenge.
Cinema vouchers and supermarket vouchers were awarded at the end of each week of the month long Challenge to recognise individual efforts. A total of 64 individual prizes were awarded – a very welcome reward for those who had persisted with pedal power despite the puddles!
The Challenge organiser, Swindon Travel Choice’s Claire Fleming, was delighted that so many workplaces and individuals had entered into the competitive spirit of the Challenge. “There were some amazing distances cycled by some organisations – there were clearly some very, very dedicated cyclists taking part. It was also great to see that the Challenge prompted some people who had taken a break from cycling to get back in the saddle. We’ve had some great feedback from returning cyclists who had real fun ‘rediscovering’ the best of getting about town!”
The Active Swindon Cycle Challenge website will remain open so that cyclists can keep track of all the miles they cycle and set personal goals throughout the summer. Visit www.activeswindonchallenge.org.uk for all the details.
