Swindon’s young people are to be praised for taking a lead on youth issues according to the Children’s Commissioner for England, and Swindon Council can be proud of the way that it is responding to their needs.
Dr Maggie Atkinson spent an afternoon in late July at The Platform youth centre in the town centre talking with twelve to 19 year olds on the town’s Youth Forum, pictured. She said, "There are very good things happening in Swindon,” said Dr Atkinson. “The youth forum is actively discussing problems affecting young people like low cost access to facilities and the cost of transport, and also the negative perceptions of young people.
“My message to adults is, just think about what it was like when you were young. The members of the forum I met are very concerned about working across generations and to represent the good and the positive that the majority offer to the community. There’s a lot to talk about and young people in Swindon want to engage in the conversation about their future and their contribution to it. And I congratulate Swindon Council for giving young people the space to discuss the issues that affect them. Government should pay attention to what is happening here.”
