Swindon Mela will be showcased on 2 December in a new TV documentary called ‘The Up for Arts Show’.
Film crews came to the Mela in July to film community dance performances on the Showcase Stage.
The Showcase Stage runs a full programme of mainly non professional dance performances contributed by local South Asian Community Groups such as the Nepalese Association, Hindu Samaj and Tamil Association. The result is a wonderfully colourful and diverse mix of traditional and modern dance, which entertains a large crowd of local people throughout the day.
Dance of all genres is one of Swindon’s real cultural credits, a testimony to the strength of Swindon Dance’s impact in the area. The importance of dance to the South Asian culture can be seen in the huge range of dance that can be seen at the Mela each year from modern Hip Hop, through glitzy Bollywood to classical Bharat Natyam.
‘The Up for Arts’ programme can be seen tonight, 2 December, on the Community Channel on Sky 539, Virgin TV 233 and Freeview 87 at 12.30, 18.30 & 00.30 respectively.
