With so much change and uncertainty in the labour market, many mothers in the town may be wondering how to start a business, or are looking for encouragement with a project they’ve already launched.
The Swindon Mums’ Business Group has been up and running since June, and has already made a tremendous difference to many mothers who are balancing their ambitions to run their own businesses with the demands of looking after their children.
Tanya Ogley and Jenni Saunders, who both advertise their businesses with The Link have recently taken over organising the monthly networking group. Tanya said, “the club exists to support members who are in various stages of developing existing businesses and to help those just starting to take the first steps into self employment. We provide a forum for women to talk about new ideas and the range of issues they face. The aim is to share, encourage and make sure everyone benefits from each other’s experience.”
Of the many networking organisations in and around the town, Swindon Mums’ Business Group is the only one which claims to be truly child friendly, where the children can play while mums chat and exchange ideas/experiences in a friendly, informal environment. Tanya added, “so far we have had one mum start a second business, another member who has decided to sell her business and move in a new direction, and another mum inspired to use the internet to support her business thanks to the fantastic talk we were given on using social media. The group is a great place for mums to test out ideas and see if they’ll work alongside childcare and home needs with people in a similar situation.”
The group usually meets on the second Friday in the month from 9.30am to 11.30am at NG Kids, next to Next Generation Fitness Club in Kembrey Park, near Gorse Hill. There is no charge for attending the meetings and mums are welcome to just turn up on the day, although it is advisable to contact Tanya or Jenni beforehand to confirm times and venue arrangements.
There is a charge of £3 per child to use the NG Kids play area and refreshments are also available to buy.
