Where else can you find songs from Olly Murs, Disney, Sammy Davis Jnr and One Direction, along with a pantomime elephant, magic carpet, lots of glitz, piles of comedy laundry, a dazzling cast of heroes, villains, princesses – and Keith Chegwin as Wishee Washee?
Of course it’s the Wyvern Theatre’s Christmas pantomime, Aladdin!
From the hilariously creepy David Ashley playing Abanazer (#’ave-a- banana), middle, to Ian Mowat as a completely over the top outrageous Widow Twankey, below, this year’s performance has got the lot, transporting theatre-goers to Swinyong, where we can hiss, boo, and sing along to our heart’s content.
As usual the Swindon audience throws itself wholeheartedly into every opportunity for audience participation, of which there are lots in this production, making for a riotous evening of family funThe panto ensemble this year is made up of students from Laine Theatre Arts in Surrey, while the dancers and chorus members from schools and colleges in Swindon put on a stunning show as Aladdin’s ‘old mates’.
Swindon is rapidly becoming Cheggers’ panto home as he’s scheduled to appear in Jack and the Beanstalk next year too, but he thoroughly appreciates the Wyvern crowd. He said: “The Wyvern Theatre audience is the noisiest and most fun-filled I’ve ever performed to. May it continue!”
Aladdin runs until Sunday 6 January 2013.
