Exploring healthy active lifestyles with 9 European partner schools
Pupils and staff from Tregoze Primary School are approaching the half-way point in their pan-European Comenius education project on the theme of ‘Fit for Europe, Good for us’, exploring healthy, active lifestyles with their partner schools from France, Italy, Sweden, Turkey, Spain, Romania, Germany and Poland.
Commenting on the project so far Tregoze’s Comenius organiser Sue Adkin said: “It’s been incredibly successful. The partners are constantly in touch with one another and the work has been of the highest standard yet.
“With nine schools working together we’ve been very busy organising the different visits and fitting them all in around school holidays and religious festivals.
“We started to give children the opportunity to travel with staff to other countries in our last Comenius partnership. On this project we’ve taken children with us on every trip.”
The project’s mascot this year is Pocy the travelling potato. The children also share an anthem to the tune of Good Time, chosen by the French school, with lyrics written by Tregoze. Sue added: “The Spanish school have choreographed a dance routine which we’re learning.”
During the next academic year the focus will shift to how food is transported, what it costs, and what the impact is on the environment. Over the summer children from all the different schools will be growing their own vegetables and preparing food from what they’ve produced.
Explaining the approach Sue said: “Given that not all families have gardens, especially in cities like Madrid, the choice of what to grow might be limited to what can be easily planted in pots, but everyone will have a go.”
Sue said the children who have been to other countries have spread the word and more want to make the trip. “It’s such a great opportunity for them to experience life in a different country,” she said: “Four children accompanied adults our partner school in France in June. We’re off to Romania in early July and to Turkey in November.”
