Arju Miah OBE, the respected member of the British Muslim community, is supporting a long running campaign to make Bangla one of the official languages used by the United Nations.
Mr Miah, who runs the restaurant with his name at Shaw Ridge Leisure Park, said the campaign originates from 21 February 1952 when students were killed in Bangladesh demanding the right to use their mother tongue.
“Being allowed to speak a language of your choice is an important mark of cultural diversity.
“Bangladesh achieved independence in 1972 partly because people fought to speak Bangla, the world’s fifth most spoken language. It is time for the United Nations to recognise it as one of its official languages.”
