Swindon is planning to celebrate the Robins speedway team’s Elite League victory on Thursday 22 November when huge crowds will gather at Wharf Green in the town centre to launch the festive season with seasonal lights and fireworks.
This is the first time since 1967 that the Robins have won the ultimate trophy in British speedway. But ideas for an open top bus tour to display the Elite League cup had to be ruled out because of the £50,000 cost of organising it.
The winter celebration organised by town centre management company InSwindon BID Company will recognise the town’s achievements during the year with members of the speedway team and management lining up with Swindon Town FC manager Paolo Di Canio to recognise the club’s promotion success.
Simon Jackson, Chief Executive of inSwindon BID Company said: “We wanted our annual Christmas Lights Switch-On to have the theme of celebrating everything British in 2012 as we have had such a fantastic year.
"With so many achievements throughout the country and indeed the town, we felt inviting Rosco and the team down was a fitting way to celebrate what has been a fantastic year for them, and Swindon as a whole.
“We have a great line-up of acts, including Swindon Dance, Ovation, The Big Sing as well as Swindon Town FC manager Paolo Di Canio, along with all our local, Olympians, Parlympians and torch bearers.”
Keith Chegwin, TV legend and star of Aladdin, this year’s pantomime at the Wyvern Theatre, will be hosting the event and brings his own unique energy and style which is sure to keep the whole crowd entertained.
The evening kicks off at 5pm, followed by performances and presentations on stage before a countdown to turn on the Christmas Lights at 7pm which also launch an incredible display of festive fireworks.
