Generous Rotarians from two Swindon clubs are joining forces again this autumn to raise funds for local charities through the annual Last Night of the Proms event at the Wyvern Theatre.
Now in its eighth year, the event organised by the Rotary Clubs of Swindon and Swindon Old Town will this year take place on Saturday 16 November a t7.30pm, and will raise funds for Prospect Hospice and Swindon Young Musicians.
The annual concert is an opportunity for young local musicians to showcase their talents, and it has raised thousands of pounds since it was first staged. Last year alone the event raised £4,000 for the two local causes.
Organising committee chairman Bob Barrett is hoping that music lovers from across the area will help make the evening a big success this year.
“We are immensely proud of the event,” he says. “Not only because it raises money for two very worthwhile charities, but also because it allows the young musicians of Swindon to play to an audience who appreciate their skills in playing classical music.
In keeping with the evening’s well-established theme, this year The Waterloo Band and The Bugles of the Rifles will perform classics such as Land of Hope and Glory and Jerusalem accompanied by soprano soloist Lynn Hawkins.
In addition, members of Swindon Young Musicians will perform familiar music from stage and screen including songs from Les Miserables to the theme music from James Bond blockbuster Skyfall
