Students and teachers of the Janice Thompson Performance Trust (JTP Trust) raised the roof with their cheers after successfully singing their way to secure a £60,000 lottery grant to stage ‘Swindon: The Opera – A musical extravaganza for the 21st century’.
Having received the cheque from The Big Lottery Fund, as part of The People’s Millions, the project can now be turned into a reality, and will be staged in Swindon in the Summer of 2012, in order to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Janice Thompson, Director of the JTP Trust commented "We are absolutely delighted and are very thankful to the people of Swindon and the surrounding areas for all their encouragement and support. I think the phone lines all over Swindon were red hot with people voting for us."
Matt Fox, Trustee of the JTP Trust said "The roof nearly came off the studio when we heard we’d won. We’re looking forward to delivering a professional musical extravaganza involving people in the community, from toddlers to those who have lived in Swindon over the past 60 years or more."
The ‘extravaganza’ will chart Swindon’s history since the Queen’s coronation in 1952 until 2012. Internationally acclaimed composer, Betty Roe MBE, and Matt Fox, Trustee of the JTP Trust will write the opera, which will put Swindon firmly on the cultural map.
The project is non-profit making, with proceeds from ticket sales being used to set-up further scholarship classes around Swindon, for those who wish to partake in singing lessons but do not have the means.
The local school children who will be involved in the opera, will be given exceptional vocal training by the professional singing teachers within the trust.
Matt Fox concluded "Once we have booked the venue, we will release the performance dates which will enable the audience to reserve those times in their diaries. We will deliver an explosion of entertainment which will appeal to all ages and tastes. It will be an historical occasion for Swindon and must not be missed."
