Last year over 200 students from Swindon College successfully won places at top universities across the country including the Universities of Bath, Reading, Exeter, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, Southampton and Cardiff.
Antony Eagle,18, right, is a former college student now studying graphic design at Kingston University. He studied for his GCSEs at Dorcan Technology College, before enrolling on a two-year National Diploma in Graphic Design at Swindon College.
During his course, Antony continued to live at home and loved the whole experience of studying at Swindon College. “I built great relationships with other students and his tutors and got a good grounding in Graphic Design, especially in software skills.”
Antony was accepted into the prestigious Kingston University following his triple distinction on the National Diploma course. “Kingston was an attractive option, not only because of its reputation in art and design but because London is at the heart of the design industry and there are plenty of opportunities for making contacts and securing employment, with more positions available to graduates,” said Antony
Twenty students of the 200 students stayed on in Swindon to study for a degree or HND at the college which is the largest provider of higher education courses in Wiltshire.
The college offers a wide range of HNC/Ds, Foundation Degrees, through to BA (Hons) courses and postgraduate programmes. This year, the college is introducing a new Foundation Degree in Engineering Systems and a MA Fine Art programme – subject to validation by the University of Bath.
Bill Hunt, HE co-ordinator at the college, says there are many advantages to studying locally. :Accommodation worries may not exist, as most students stay living at home while studying. Also financially, students may find that they are better off and may not need to borrow a huge student loan. At Swindon College a bursary scheme has been set up to help students who study on a full time higher education courses. The students could be eligible for a cash payment of up to ??800 in each year they study at the College.”
