A local bestseller from the day of its first publication in the Spring 1994, classic walking book Pub Walks in Wiltshire by Nick Channer (Countryside Books £7.99) is now re-published in a completely updated format. Nick has re-walked all the routes and re-visited all the recommended pubs to check on the food.
The layout inside the book has also been changed to make it easier to follow the directions and to find other information such as the distance to be covered and what places of interest can be seen en route. The 20 circular routes vary in length from 2 to 7 miles and each walk is clearly described and accompanied by a sketch map. There is also a brief history of the pub, a short piece on its present menu and ales, and a photograph of the outside.
The routes take the walker through some of the most varied and beautiful countryside in Wiltshire with walks beside tranquil rivers and canals, through peaceful woodland and unspoiled valleys; over high chalk downs; around delightful villages; and across lush water meadows.
Along the way there is the chance to see the magnificent gardens of Heale House; the Elizabethan mansion of Corsham Court which dates back to 1582; and Bowood House with its superb gardens, originally designed by 'Capability' Brown.
'I believe the walks reflect the diversity and true spirit of Wiltshire' says Nick Channer, 'it is one of England's lovliest counties'.
